Jon R. Steckler

Jon's practice is focused on commercial and business law and related litigation and appeals. Serving as general corporate counsel for companies in various industries, Jon regularly advises clients on a broad range of issues facing businesses on a day-to-day basis. Jon advises on complex commercial contracts, franchise agreements, distribution contracts, construction contracts, non-compete agreements, commercial leases, and asset and stock purchase agreements. In addition to representing clients in general commercial, corporate and operational matters, Jon represents clients in state and federal courts, administrative hearings and in alternative dispute resolution in jurisdictions nationwide. Assessment and management of risk for clients on wide-ranging operational and strategic issues, timely issue spotting and front-end problem solving are among Jon's core strengths. Jon received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from South Dakota State University, and his J.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Law, where he served as the Managing Editor of the South Dakota Law Review and earned Dean's List honors. After law school, Jon served as a judicial clerk at the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Early in his legal career, Jon served as a prosecuting attorney for several suburban municipalities. Jon has provided pro bono legal services through Volunteer Lawyers Network and LegalCORPS and has served as pro bono general counsel for a non-profit no-kill animal shelter and adoption agency for over 16 years. Jon has been selected to the Minnesota Super Lawyer’s list since 2022 and has been recognized by America's Top 100 Bet-the-Company Litigators. Jon and his wife live in Golden Valley with their daughter and their Chihuahua, Jeffrey. In his spare time, Jon enjoys running, biking, swimming, hiking, and golfing, and has volunteered as an instructor for the Loppet Foundation Trail Kids Mountain Bike Program.

Known for practical, business-minded advice, Brandt has led liquor licensing acquisitions for major Twin Cities sports and entertainment venues including securing licenses and government approval on zoning and operational components. Brandt has significant experience negotiating agreements for distributors, ensuring importation and sale of alcoholic beverages remain legally compliant. He also works with states to formulate and create regulatory systems to uphold health and public safety for highly regulated products. Daniel A. Christians

Associate Attorney

Daniel is an associate attorney at Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, P.A. having joined the firm in May 2023. Daniel graduated Cum Laude from Saint Cloud State University where he majored in History and obtained a minor in Criminal Justice. He then went on to graduate Cum Laude from Hamline University School of Law. During his time in law school, Daniel traveled and worked for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Located in The Hague, Netherlands, Daniel was a member of a Croatian team of attorneys defending members of the Croatian military accused of war crimes. Prior to joining Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, Daniel was the owner of Nexus International, PLLC practicing primarily in the immigration law field and worked in the mortgage industry for the previous eight years. Prior to that he was an associate attorney at Hawkins Law Office, P.A. in Minneapolis practicing in immigration, criminal defense, and business law. Daniel lives in Brooklyn Center with his daughter and their chocolate lab, Obie. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, getting out on the Mississippi River, and attending any and all sporting events. He frequently volunteers coaching youth soccer Maplebrook Soccer Club and is a Board Member and Soccer Director with Champlin Dayton Athletic Association.

Christopher W. Bowman

Christopher Bowman joined Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, P.A. in 2019 and became a shareholder with the firm in 2023. His practice area is a blend of litigation and transactional work, with a particular emphasis on appellate practice and commercial litigation. He has served as lead appellate counsel before the Fifth, Eighth, and Ninth Circuits, the Iowa Supreme Court, and both the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Minnesota Supreme Court, including multiple issues of first impression and other important questions on a wide range of practice areas, and has consulted or otherwise served as “drop-in” counsel for clients and lawyers around the Country, handling major motions and appeals. Chris is also a frequent presenter on appellate topics at CLE Courses. Chris is active in the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Section, which he chaired for the 2022-2023 Bar Year. In addition to private clients, Chris has represented the MSBA, the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, and the State of Minnesota before the appellate courts in Minnesota on multiple occasions, either as amicus or as appointed counsel, on matters relating to civil rights litigation, family law, environmental law, and civil and criminal procedure. Thomas P. Harlan

Tom is one of the founding shareholders of Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, P.A. and except for a short hiatus with a startup real estate/tax lien acquisition, holding and servicing company, he has practiced law since 1991. He brings an entrepreneurial spirit to his practice that is reflected in the clients that he represents. Tom's focus has been on business, real estate and construction law. He serves as counselor to a variety of small to medium-size businesses advising them on all aspects of business law from formation and capitalization of entities, to consulting and negotiating various contracts, leases, and other agreements, and finally representing these clients and their needs in federal and state courts across the country. He has advised clients on all forms of corporate transactions, financing, and land use issues Tom has served as an expert testifying about various aspects of real estate and corporate law. Representative Work Real Estate: - Represented manufacturing company in the sale of its $7.8 million dollar facility. - Represented group of investors in a $9 million dollar roll-up of their tenant-in common interests into a new entity which has continued ownership interest in the property. - Represented clients in an asset sale transaction that involved 52 separate real estate locations. - Served as counsel for a $900 million transaction involving the purchase of chain of restaurants. - Represented clients in a $25 million loan restructuring secured by various assets including three separate parcels of real estate. - Represented client in a purchase of a $2.0 million dollar distressed office building. - Represented client in negotiating 38 separate easement agreements to create sufficient space for a 35 Megawatt wind farm. - Represented client in negotiating a lease with Texas municipality and easement rights over various gas and oil interests. - Worked on all aspects of the purchase, sale, redemption, and foreclosure of tax liens in a $45 million dollar portfolio. Richard M. Dahl

Rich is one of the founding shareholders of Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, P.A. For the past 30 years, he has been actively engaged in a nationwide practice in the above-reference areas representing both companies and individuals in a broad range of sophisticated commercial matters. He is licensed in the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeal. Rich has been AV rated by Martindale Hubble for many years. Rich graduated Cum Laude from Hamline School of Law in 1983, where he was a published author and served as a primary editor of the Hamline Law Review. He received his B.S. (Summa Cum Laude) and Master's Degree (with honors) in Public Administration from Northern Michigan University (NMU). While attending NMU on an athletic and academic scholarship, Rich was honored as an All American by the NCAA. During the past thirty years, Rich has represented numerous members and licensees of the beverage alcohol industry in administrative, licensing, regulatory, transactional and litigation matters. Rich’s diverse litigation practice has included the following representative cases: MillerCoors, LLC v. Larrys Distributing Co., Inc., et al. — Wisconsin State Court. Represented two highly successful Wisconsin beer distributors opposing brewer's efforts to terminate the Defendant's multi-million distribution rights. MDH asserted the Distributors were protected under with the Wisconsin Dealership Law and successfully defeated the Plaintiff's Motion for Summary Judgment, after which, Plaintiff dismissed its claims and abandoned its termination efforts awarding Defendants new distribution agreements. Mountain Beverage Co., LLC v. The Foursome, Inc. d/b/a Co-Orrison Distributing, Ltd. and d/b/a Orrison Distributing, Ltd. — Colorado Arbitration. Represented a Colorado beer distributor who received a 1.1 Million Dollar arbitration award following the termination of certain distribution rights. Klindworth v. Prairie Island Mdewakanton Dakota Community, d/b/a Treasure Island Resort and Casino — Minnesota State Court. Represented Prairie Island in a negligence, dram shop, and wrongful death claim arising out of a two-car fatal automobile accident resulting in the death of a young college student. The case was satisfactorily resolved pursuant to a confidential settlement agreement prior to trial. Nott Company v. Todd N. Palmer, et al. — Minnesota State Court. Successfully defended a Minnesota Distributor in which Plaintiff sought damages in excess of 3.3 Million Dollars for claims alleging tortuous interference with a non-compete agreement, interference with business relationships, and unjust enrichment. Following a two week trial, the jury returned a unanimous defense verdict in favor of MDH's client dismissing all of the Plaintiff's claims. Lucent Technologies, Inc., et al. v. Entegris, Inc. f/k/a Fluoroware Corp., et al. — Florida State Court (Orange County). Defended a Minnesota-based high-tech valve manufacturer in a subrogation case in which Plaintiff sought damages in excess of 52 Million Dollars arising out of a hydrochloric acid spill, in the clean room of a microchip fabrication facility located in Orlando, Florida. Following extensive nationwide discovery and motion practice, the case was ultimately resolved before trial pursuant to a confidential settlement agreement. New Generation Food Co. v. Dairyland Products, Inc. — Minnesota State Court. Obtained a jury verdict, dismissing Plaintiffs multi-million dollar damage claims after a month long jury trial where the Defendant was accused of misappropriating Plaintiff’s trade secrets and proprietary formula in violation of the Minnesota Trade Secrets Act. Chuck H E Vogel, et al. v. Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc., et al. — Wisconsin State Court. Successfully represented two of four shareholders in a shareholder dispute involving a company with annual sales in excess of 2.5 Billion Dollars. Following extensive litigation, the dispute was satisfactorily resolved in accordance with a confidential settlement agreement.

Michael D. Madigan

Mike Madigan is a founding shareholder of Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, P.A., bringing more than 40 years of experience in administrative, alcohol beverage, antitrust, business, commercial, distributor, dealer, franchise, construction, employment, and environmental law. For over thirty-five (35) years, Mike has been AV-rated by Martindale Hubbell and recognized as a "Super Lawyer" for twenty-one (21) years. Mike has also been selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America in the practice area of Franchise Law. For the last thirty (30) years, he has served as an Arbitrator and Mediator on the Complex Commercial Panel of the American Arbitration Association and served as a Neutral on the Minnesota ADR Neutrals Roster. In addition, Mike has been inducted as a Senior Fellow, Litigation Counsel of America (a trial lawyer honorary society composed of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers). Currently, Mike serves on the Board of Minnesota Trout Unlimited (as Chair); and the Wild Rivers Conservancy of the St. Croix and Namekagon.
